The Malaysian government offers legal free legal aid assistance to Malaysian.
Eligibility of The Applicant
- Category I
The yearly financial resources amounting to RM30,000 and below;
- Category II
Annual financial resources exceed RM30,000 but not exceeding RM50,000

Bar Council Malaysia’s Legal Aid Services
In addition to the government’s efforts, the legal profession in Malaysia also plays an active role in providing legal aid services through the Bar Council Malaysia. Comprising dedicated lawyers and legal professionals, the Bar Council’s Legal Aid Centers offer invaluable assistance to individuals who require legal aid but may not qualify for government-funded programs. These centers extend their reach to various communities across the nation, ensuring that access to justice is available to a wider population.
There are two (2) types of Legal Aids available by Bar Council, i.e. Legal Aid Center (“LAC”) or the Yayasan Bantuan Guaman (“YBGK”). The LAC covers a wider area of services including the civil matters, family law, labour and employment law, syariah law and law relates to public interest, whilst YBDK only handles criminal matters.
However, it is important to note that there are eligibility criteria that must be met when seeking legal aid from the Bar Council’s Legal Aid Centers.
The key to the entitlement of LAC services is about the financial position of a person. The monthly income of the party shall, after deducting the month expenses, shall not exceed RM 500.00 for a single person and RM 900.00 for a married person.
Further to the above, the person so entitled shall not own the followings:
- A house exceeding RM 45,000.00;
- A car exceeding RM 10,000.00;
- A motorcycle RM 4,500.00; or
- Saving exceeding RM 5,000.00
Meanwhile, although the YBGK provides free advice and assistance on criminal matters to everyone, a person’s earning shall be less than RM 3,000.00 per month or RM 36,000.00 annually should he requires a volunteer lawyer for trial in court.
